The 'Gamemaster is a Player but he is not counted as that in Star Trek Adventures. He is the one who determines the Player's fate, who plays the opponent and some allied NPCs and starship and he knows all about the locations of the Players before they know it. He determines how much he reveals the Players and is besides the Player Group the most important "Player" in Star Trek Adventures.
In case of Captain's Log this Player will be Player and GM at the same time.
Gamemastering a game of Star Trek Adventures[edit | edit source]
Standard Game[edit | edit source]
Telling a Story[edit | edit source]
- Gamemaster frames the action
- Gamemaster established the Traits
- Players take actions
- Player and Gamemaster resolve action
- Gamemaster responds to the actions and narrates the consequences
- Repeat until the scene or Encounter is resolved
Resolving the rules[edit | edit source]
The GM decides which rules come to play! But keep in mind, that the GM shouldn't play against the Players anytime!
Completing Tasks or resolving Conflict is done like that:
- Player frames their action
- The Gamemaster asks for the relevant dice roll (roll for a Task, an Extended Task or including a Challenge and states the relevant Difficulty
- Player and Gamemaster agree on Attribute and Discepline Target Number
- Player resolves dice roll(s)
- Gamemaster descirbes the result (Momentum can be spend by Players to extend the basic Success)
Charcater Creation[edit | edit source]
- Role Concept: The Players should discuss their roles in the group (an who forfills which) or have a clear idea from the beginning. Both may be best to use the Creation in Play rules. Whith that the Players experience their position best and which role they really fulfill.
- Species Concept: When the Players don't know which rank or position aboard they really wanna fulfill, but they know which species they want, the Lifepath Creation is the best concept for that.
- Values Concept: When the Players come with a clear Value in mind, the Players and Gamemaster can pick either Creation in Play or Lifepath Creation but whith focussing on the Value first. Afterwards the creation process can be done in the correct order.
- Randomization: Some Players may struggle with one or more random table with determing a random table matching to their Chacter's concept or lack in creativity. That can be resolved with allowing the players to mix random table outcomes with own ideas.
- Creating Values: Creating Values can be challenging, therefore you can give a quite different Lifepath Creation variant. Players can leave the Values out until they have a better idea of what Character they want to play.
- Traits: As standard a Player Character has at least a single Trait that represents their Species, but can potentially have more then that. It describes the pure at least very hard to change nature of the character. With GMs descretion more then one Trait can be applied.
