Star Trek is a Franchise, which is created by Gene Roddenberry. It discribes a utopic futuristic human civilization which left war, money and harassment asside and are now seeking out for new world, new life and new civilizations. It shows also the complicated Vulcan High command in the first years of the United Federation of Planets, the Romulan Star Empire which wants war with the Federation and the Klingon Empire which hates and loves the UFP.
In later series and episodes the Borg Collective, the Cardassian Union and The Dominion represent each a quite complicated fiend, that seams unpullable to the Federation's side... Or the always questionable Ferengi Alliance.
There are right now 10 series and 13 movies which all have those key elements within their core, but describe different times or dimensions.
