The Earth human is in his mid-40s at the time of Star Trek Adventures: Adventures aboard the Artus. He has a half-bald head and a Garibaldi beard, and since his character is more cheerful than inquisitive, he almost always has a smile on his lips. Emex Gerwinde lost his right arm after a fight, and with his technical expertise, he built an elaborate cybernetic prosthesis, which even houses a complete Type-1 phaser.

Since Starfleet regulations do not allow wearing a uniform other than the one standard for the era and the assigned starship, Captain Tofu decided, at the request of Cmdr. Asta, that he may wear a modified uniform. While he has the standard top, he wears knee protectors under his pants. Additionally, his shoes are equipped with steel toes that are gold-colored, as he often has to tackle the toughest tasks and cannot risk injuring his foot.

What is special about Emex Gerwinde is that he always rolls up the sleeves of his uniform.
